AFI has announced that Rebecca Green has joined the AFI Conservatory as the new Head of the Producing Discipline.

Rebecca Green has made an impact across many facets of our industry, most notably as a champion for producers and as a strong advocate for their vital role in the industry. Her newsletter “Dear Producer” has become an essential resource for independent producers as well as a reflection on the state of the industry. Her work as a member of Producers United, and her roles at Sundance Institute and Film Independent, along with her extensive experience in producing independent films all reflect the range of her expertise. Combined with her industry experience and her dedication to teaching she brings a wealth of knowledge to the next generation of Producers entering the AFI Master of Fine Arts program.

Green has produced critically acclaimed independent films that have achieved both commercial success and artistic recognition. Her notable credits include the breakout horror film IT FOLLOWS and the poignant drama I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS. Her recent work includes ALL THAT WE LOVE, directed by Yen Tan and starring Margaret Cho and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, which premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. She also produced DOWNTOWN OWL, an adaptation of Chuck Klosterman’s novel featuring Lily Rabe, Ed Harris and Vanessa Hudgens, which premiered at Tribeca 2023 and is now streaming on Netflix.

Green’s diverse portfolio extends beyond narrative features to include the documentary 44 PAGES, exploring the cultural impact of Highlights magazine, and the Amazon pilot HOT PINK starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, produced in partnership with Annapurna Television.

Prior to her producing career, Green held key executive positions including Manager of Producing Initiatives at Sundance Institute, Vice President at Lynda Obst Productions at Paramount Pictures and Creative Executive at Lionsgate. This executive experience provides her with comprehensive insight into all aspects of film development and production.

Green served as Lead Creative Advisor for the Film Independent Producing Lab for five years and continues as a story and producing advisor for the Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund in Baltimore, demonstrating her commitment to nurturing emerging talent.

Her educational experience includes teaching positions at the University of Michigan, University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Wayne State University in Detroit.

Green’s industry recognition includes being named one of Variety’s “10 Producers to Watch” and receiving a nomination for the Producers Award at the 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards. She is a 2017 Women at Sundance Fellow and serves as a member of both the Producers Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Producers United.

As founder and editor-in-chief of Dear Producer, Green has created a unique platform where producers share knowledge, build community and mentor emerging filmmakers. This innovative approach to industry education aligns perfectly with AFI’s mission to advance excellence in the artform. Rebecca’s commitment to mentorship and community building will be invaluable to our students as they prepare for careers in an evolving industry.
