And the Honorees are…
It’s that time of year again. AFI is honoring the most outstanding films and television programs of the year with AFI AWARDS. The non-competitive AFI AWARDS acknowledge the collaborative nature of film and TV production, bringing the community’s creative teams together in a unique celebration of their work.
This year’s list includes 10 television programs and, for the first time in AFI AWARDS history, 11 motion pictures. The 2014 honorees deemed by AFI’s Jury to be culturally and artistically representative of the year’s most significant achievements are:
MOVIES OF THE YEAR AMERICAN SNIPER BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE) BOYHOOD FOXCATCHER THE IMITATION GAME INTERSTELLAR INTO THE WOODS NIGHTCRAWLER SELMA UNBROKEN WHIPLASH |
TV PROGRAMS OF THE YEAR THE AMERICANS FARGO GAME OF THRONES HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER JANE THE VIRGIN THE KNICK MAD MEN ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK SILICON VALLEY TRANSPARENT |
And come January, we’ll have 20 new videos which will make up our AFI AWARDS 2014 video almanac. These clips will feature honorees talking about their films and television shows – just like we did last year. Stay tuned.

BIRDMAN was outstanding. Pure magic realism on film. I think it would’ve been Borges’ favorite movie. And INTERSTELLAR’s use of actual algorithms to recreate what a black hole might look like was mind-blowing. Both extremely deserving of this honor.

No House of Cards? It’s a better show than at least 5 or 6 of the other honorees.
ALEX
No Gone Girl? No Grand Budapest Hotel? No House of Cards? No True Detective? No Louie? Odd choices.

I still need to see six of these, but, of the eleven chosen that I have seen…I am certainly in agreement with most of the choices. Boyhood was a perfect film…just brilliant in every conceivable way. Interstellar was also a fantastic ride and amazing acheivement. Whiplash was excellent, I’m so happy that J.K. Simmons is finally getting his due. But, I think Birdman was pretentious nonsense. I need to see the other couple before I can speak to those….eagerly awaiting Unbroken-book was incredible.
As for your television selections, I have to ask where is Veep, Good Wife, or Girls? What do you got against the ladies AFI? And not including The Leftovers or True Detective is unforgivable. I was happy to see The Knick make the cut.

In my opinion, American Sniper is the best film of the year.

Where did you see it? It doesn’t open up around here for another month.
