Movie Trivia About GIRLS TRIP

DID YOU KNOW?  GIRLS TRIP made history as the first movie written by, produced by, directed by and starring Black artists to cross the $100 million box office mark. It is also the first time a film written by a Black female screenwriter – Tracy Oliver – crossed the $100 million mark.

DID YOU KNOW? Director Malcolm D. Lee and producer Will Packer approached ESSENCE in 2014 about shooting GIRLS TRIP on location at the festival. Without a script, Lee and Packer presented the concept of a comedy centered around friendship and love with the three-day festival as the backdrop. Packer also has his own personal affection for the festival; it was where he met his wife, and where he later proposed to her on stage in the Super Dome during a concert during the festival.

DID YOU KNOW? Director Malcolm D. Lee has said that ESSENCE Festival provided an incredible setting, although it came with its challenges: production was consistently interrupted by fans shouting out enthusiastically and requesting photos from the actresses while they were filming.

DID YOU KNOW? Tiffany Haddish improvised climbing up on the stage to join Sean “Diddy” Combs. Instead of walking up the stairs as planned, Haddish climbed up the speaker when Diddy invited her on stage. The surprised look on Queen Latifah’s face during the scene is her actual reaction to what was going on.

DID YOU KNOW? GIRLS TRIP is the first onscreen collaboration between Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith since SET IT OFF, which was released 20 years prior. As a throwback to their earlier film together, the Flossy Posse wears the same wigs and sunglasses in the club scene as they wore in the bank robbery scene in SET IT OFF.

DID YOU KNOW? There are no actual ziplines on Bourbon Street. To shoot the infamous scene with Jada Pinkett Smith, they shut down two blocks of Bourbon Street and brought in a crane and special rigging since they weren’t able to attach anything to the historic buildings. And all four leads shot the zipline scene without stunt doubles!
