Acclaimed Chinese-American cinematographer James Wong Howe earned an Academy Award® – his second, and his eighth of 10 nominations – for his striking black-and-white work on HUD. An artist and an innovator with iconic work dating from the silent era of cinema into the 1970s, he was named among the top 10 most influential cinematographers in the history of the art form by the International Cinematographers Guild in 2003. Celebrated and sought after by stars and directors alike, he was nonetheless denied American citizenship until after the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Known for his exquisite lighting and pioneering techniques, Howe visited the AFI Conservatory several times to speak about his experiences and impart advice to the next generation of filmmakers.

We all have had the experience of seeing great cinematographers in the history of film. But James Wong Howe stands out as one of the best and most memorable. His lush black and white visuals dazzled and enriched the story and characters. I always look forward to seeing what he has created on screen.
