Watch Steve Martin at Past AFI Life Achievement Award Tributes

Steve Martin has made many memorable appearances at previous AFI Life Achievement Award Tributes — including those for Tom Hanks and Gene Kelly. Since Martin will receive his own much-deserved award later this week, where he’ll be honored by friends, colleagues and peers, we thought now would be a good a time as any to take a look at how he has saluted past recipients of the award. And, of course, the comedy legend delivers every line in his hilarious signature deadpan manner.

In 2002, Martin opened the AFI Life Achievement Award Tribute to Tom Hanks, which he jokingly christened, “the AFI Mid-life Achievement Award.”

Ever the jokester, Martin told the entire audience during Kelly’s 1985 Tribute that he’s the guy responsible — sort of — for a certain famous dance number that involves a lamp post and whole lotta rain.

Martin will receive his very own AFI Life Achievement Award at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Thursday, June 4, 2015. Watch the Gala Tribute when it airs on TBS on Saturday, June 13, 2015.

How can Steve Martin get a Lifetime Achievement Award before Woody Allen, Robert Duvall and Gene Hackman? This is a joke, right?
