The debut – and only – feature as director, writer and producer from star Barbara Loden, WANDA (1971) was chosen as the only American entry in the 1970 Venice Film Festival, where it won the International Critics’ Prize for Best Film. The film received almost universally laudatory reviews – including one from the Los Angeles Times noting that she and costar Michael Higgins “deserve to be remembered in the next year’s Oscar® race.”
