Originally inspired by an idea from special effects legend Willis O’Brien – whose technical wizardry first brought King Kong to life in his original screen incarnation – the lost world adventure of THE VALLEY OF GWANGI (1969) was inherited and developed by O’Brien’s protégé, AFI Honorary Degree recipient Ray Harryhausen – whose own stature as a beloved animator and innovator grew to equal his mentor’s, indeed surpassing even the scale of the many monstrous behemoths he brought to cinematic life.
