A pitch-black comedy from director – and AFI Life Achievement Award honoree – Martin Scorsese, THE KING OF COMEDY (1983) puts the spotlight on another recipient of the American Film Institute’s highest honor for a career in film: Robert De Niro, starring as a failed comic who kidnaps his idol, played by screen legend Jerry Lewis. The film co-stars Sandra Bernhard as De Niro’s hapless sidekick and was edited by Scorsese’s frequent collaborator – and AFI Honorary Degree recipient – Thelma Schoonmaker.
