Adapted from John Steinbeck’s now-classic novel only a year after its publication, THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940) was selected for the American Film Institute’s original and 10th anniversary lists of the greatest American films of all time, with Henry Fonda’s portrayal of Tom Joad ranked among AFI’s greatest screen heroes, and the film itself counted as one of the most inspiring films ever. Director John Ford was awarded the first-ever AFI Life Achievement Award in 1973, while Fonda would go on to receive the honor five years later.
