Written by Spokane-Coeur d’Alene author Sherman Alexie, who adapted a story from his own 1993 collection, “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven,” SMOKE SIGNALS (1998) marked the theatrical debut of director Chris Eyre – a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal Nations – and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
