Filmed back-to-back with THE OUSTIDERS – another adaptation of an S.E. Hinton novel – RUMBLE FISH (1983) stars Matt Dillon and Mickey Rourke as two brothers with radically different dreams and aspirations. Shot in black and white and heavily influenced by German Expressionism and French New Wave, the film was co-written, directed and executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola – newly minted as the 50th recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award – with production design by AFI Honorary Degree recipient Dean Tavoularis.
