LOSING GROUND (1982), a semi-autobiographical film from writer, director and producer Kathleen Collins, follows a philosophy professor and her flamboyant artist husband who are having a marital crisis – and is also one of the first narrative features directed by a Black woman. The film took its long-overdue place in the cultural pantheon in 2015 when Nina Collins – the director’s daughter – rescued and restored the original negative to create a new digital master of the film. In 2020, LOSING GROUND was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry.
