Here’s Why ‘Breaking Bad’ Creator Vince Gilligan Decided to Set the Show in Albuquerque

How much of a different show would BREAKING BAD have been if it has taken place in Southern California instead of Albuquerque, New Mexico, the city in which we would eventually watch the lives of its many tortured characters play out? Apparently, the setting made all the difference.

During a visit to the AFI Campus this month to talk about the show’s spinoff, BETTER CALL SAUL, creator Vince Gilligan explained how he was convinced to drop Riverside, California, his original idea and a city that is well-known for it’s well-known methamphetamine problem, as the show’s location. According to him, the smartest thing he did was to just “roll with” the new choice of Albuquerque because the city itself would become its own character on the show.

Watch Gilligan’ s explanation in the clip below.
