A powerful tale of the Union Army’s first African American regiment in the Civil War, GLORY (1989) was directed by AFI Conservatory alum Edward Zwick (AFI Class of 1975), edited by Steven Rosenblum (AFI Class of 1976) and stars two AFI Life Achievement Award recipients – Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. The film marked the big screen debut for actor Andre Braugher, who plays Corporal Thomas Searles in the film – and earned Washington an Oscar® for Best Supporting Actor, as well as a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. GLORY also won Academy Awards® for Best Cinematography and Sound. In the end credits of GLORY, the producers acknowledged the invaluable contribution of the thousands of living history re-enactors from 20 states whose donation of time, equipment and Civil War combat expertise made the film possible.
