FRONTMAN Wins VIZIO + Dolby Vision Filmmaker Challenge

VIZIO, Inc. has announced today that AFI Conservatory Class of 2015 Cinematographer Todd Sheridan’s FRONTMAN (an AFI thesis film directed by Matthew Gentile, Class of 2015) is the winning selection in the VIZIO + Dolby Vision Filmmaker Challenge. FRONTMAN scored highest out of five finalists by a panel of judges. Clinching the top prize, Sheridan will be honored with the VIZIO + Dolby Vision Cinematography Award and will receive $5,000. The film will screen at AFI FEST 2016 presented by Audi in Hollywood, CA.

Along with the other finalists, FRONTMAN will be re-graded in Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range and is now available for home audiences to stream through VUDU. (More info on the contest is here.)

Established to celebrate excellence in the art of storytelling and advancements in filmmaking, the VIZIO + Dolby Vision Filmmaker Challenge inspired rising cinematographers to showcase their filmmaking prowess. The contest invited second-year Fellows from the AFI Conservatory — the American Film Institute’s renowned film training program — to submit a three-minute clip of their films. From the pool of entries, a panel of judges selected the top five that best showcased striking visuals, a compelling narrative and creativity.

“VIZIO and Dolby have been great partners in celebrating the next generation of filmmakers,” said Stephen Lighthill, ASC, Senior Filmmaker-in-Residence: Cinematography, AFI Conservatory. “We’re proud of all the Fellows for their ongoing commitment to their craft and congratulate Todd Sheridan for taking the top honors.”

The top five AFI Class of 2015 Cinematography finalists and their films were: Simu Feng for BREATHE, Halyna Hutchins for HIDDEN, Avner Mayer for SHUN, Todd Sheridan for FRONTMAN (winner) and Toshihiko Kizu for THE FLESH OF MY LOVERS.

Earlier this year, FRONTMAN director Gentile received the Directing Award at the 2016 College Television Awards.
