Adapted from the novel by Fannie Flagg – who also co-wrote the screenplay – and featuring an all-star cast that includes Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker and AFI Honorary Degree recipient Cicely Tyson, FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (1991) marked the feature directorial debut of AFI Alum Jon Avnet (AFI Class of 1972) – a recipient of AFI’s Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal, who now helps to guide the mission of the American Film Institute itself in his role as Vice Chair for the AFI Board of Trustees.
