Granting entrance into a world of erotic psychological delights and dangers, “fidelio” is the iconic password featured in Staley Kubrick’s EYES WIDE SHUT (1999) – the final film from the legendary director, featuring an all-star cast that includes Tom Cruise, Sydney Pollack and AFI Alum Todd Field (AFI Class of 1992) – as well as a magnetic performance from Nicole Kidman, who tonight will join the ranks of great artists who have earned the highest honor for a career in film – to take her “deserved place beside leaders in other arts.” First established in 1973 to honor an individual whose career in motion pictures has greatly contributed to the enrichment of American culture, the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award was presented to Kidman at a Gala Tribute on April 27, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
