Congrats to AFI’s 2016 Oscar Nominees

Four AFI Conservatory alumni have been nominated for 2016 Academy Award® — in the Best Picture, Best Animated Feature, Best Live Action Short and Best Cinematography categories.

Director/writer Henry Hughes’ (AFI Class of 2014) AFI Conservatory thesis film DAY ONE received a Live Action Short nomination following an awards season winning streak that included the gold medal at the 2015 Student Academy Awards and a BAFTA Student Film Award.

Producer Steve Golin (AFI Class of 1981) received Best Picture nominations for both THE REVENANT and SPOTLIGHT; ANOMALISA director/producer Duke Johnson (AFI Class of 2006) has been nominated for Animated Feature; and cinematographer Robert Richardson (AFI Class of 1979) has been nominated for his work on THE HATEFUL EIGHT.

DAY ONE is the 13th AFI Conservatory thesis film to receive an Oscar® nomination in the last four decades, with three going on to win. Here’s the film’s synopsis:

Inspired by a true story, DAY ONE depicts a new translator’s first day accompanying a US Army unit as it searches for a local terrorist. As she quickly discovers, her job will bring up brutal complexities as gender and religious barriers emerge with lives hanging in the balance.

Why wasn’t Brooklyn named one of AFI’s top ten movies of 2015? It is one of the reasons I am hesitating renewing my membership

That’s o.k I am entitled to my opinion. I feel too many spaces given to technologically innovative films and n ot enough space given to stories well crafted, acted and filmed. Your refusal top print my comment cements with regret with my decision to not renew Please remove me from your list
