A chilling psychological thriller directed by J. Lee Thompson – and later reimagined by AFI Life Achievement Award honorees Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro – CAPE FEAR (1962) was named by the American Film Institute among the art form’s greatest thrills and features the iconic pairing of Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, the latter a recipient of AFI’s highest honor for a career in film as well as the American Film Institute’s Founding Chairman. Mitchum’s Max Cady was also named by AFI among the most terrifying villains in the art form’s history.
