To help bring BETTER LUCK TOMORROW (2002) to life, writer/director Justin Lin collaborated with AFI Alum Patrice Lucien Cochet (AFI Class of 1998), who served as the cinematographer for the film. When investors pulled their financial support of the film, Lin made a desperate call to MC Hammer, whom he’d met years prior at a trade show. Though the rapper didn’t remember Lin, he listened to the pitch – and by the end of the call was convinced of the project’s value. Ultimately, it was Hammer who provided the financing needed to complete the film.
