Chronicling a touchstone true legal case sometimes referred to as a turning point in the American perspective on slavery, AMISTAD (1997) is brought to the screen by a stellar ensemble cast led by Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins, Matthew McConaughey and AFI Life Achievement Award honoree Morgan Freeman – one of three honorees responsible for shining a proper light on this imperative story, along with director Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams. The film was photographed by cinematographer – and AFI Alum – Janusz Kamiński (AFI Class of 1987) and produced by AFI Trustee Emerita Debbie Allen.
