Adapted from German author Erich Maria Remarque’s novel of World War I, director Lewis Milestone’s ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930) is, according to its onscreen prologue, “neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it.” The film was recognized on the American Film Institute’s original list of the greatest films of all time – as well as among the greatest filmed epics.
