EO

In Polish auteur Jerzy Skolimowski’s playful tribute to Robert Bresson’s 1966 AU HASARD BALTHAZAR, we experience the kindness and the cruelty of the human world through the melancholic eyes of a donkey. Its minimalistic tale is extravagantly and expressionistically conveyed through astoundingly beautiful cinematography and a lush soundscape, earning it the shared Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and the honor of being Poland’s official Oscar® submission.

GEOGRAPHIES OF SOLITUDE

Screening to be followed by a conversation with director Jacquelyn Mills.

Shot on 16mm film with all its analog imperfections and curiosities, Jacquelyn Mills captures Sable Island’s rare biodiversity – of seaweed, snails, the majestic Sable Island horses – and the human who has dedicated her life to preserving its beauty against the alarming destruction of trash pollution and climate change. Through a series of conversations between Mills and conservationist Zoe Lucas, we observe gentle wonders such as music arranged from electrodes tracking a beetle’s footsteps and experimental interludes of horse-hair-grafted, starlight-exposed film stock.
