AFI DOCS Announces 2019 Impact Lab

AFI DOCS announces the five films selected for the fifth annual AFI DOCS Impact Lab in partnership with Raben Impact Entertainment, a division of The Raben Group. The selections for this distinguished fellowship and training program are four feature documentary films — 17 BLOCKS, BORDER SOUTH, GAY CHORUS DEEP SOUTH and A WOMAN’S WORK: THE NFL’S CHEERLEADER PROBLEM — and the short documentary film ST. LOUIS SUPERMAN.

“We are proud to once again partner with The Raben Group’s Impact Entertainment team for the AFI DOCS Impact Lab,” said Michael Lumpkin, Director, AFI Festivals. “The Impact Lab films highlight incredible stories of people who are making a difference in the world — and these films have the power to bring their stories to audiences here in DC and across the country.”

“This year’s filmmakers and fellows are fierce, compassionate and unwavering in their commitment to use film as a catapult for positive change. They are as diverse as the stories they tell, and I am confident that the Lab will maximize the impact they will have in the world.” Heidi Nel, Principal and Head of Impact Entertainment at The Raben Group and co-founder of the AFI DOCS Impact Lab.

Led by impact strategists Heidi Nel and Charlie Crocker, the AFI DOCS Impact Lab is a competitive fellowship and two-day training program held on June 18-19, the eve of the festival. Designed to empower and elevate filmmakers with unique voices and issue-driven films, the Lab helps creatives generate broader social impact and political change through the power of story and film.

The Lab provides fellows with unique training opportunities in the areas of advocacy, grassroots communications and grasstops engagement. In addition to exclusive training with some of the most sought-after tacticians in the social impact and political space, Lab fellows are connected with policymakers and Congressional aides working on legislation relevant to their films.
