Directed by John Cassavetes, A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (1974) stars Gena Rowlands in a powerhouse performance as a loving but troubled mother suffering a mental breakdown. Cassavetes was a senior filmmaker–in–residence at the AFI Conservatory, and the film was itself crewed by AFI Fellows – who received a collective credit at the end. Rowlands also received an Honorary Degree from AFI in 1998.
