Adapted from Tennessee Williams’ play by director Elia Kazan, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (1951) stars Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando, both named by the American Film Institute among cinema’s greatest screen legends – the latter ranking at #4 of all time. Other accolades from AFI include inclusion on both of the institute’s vaunted lists of the greatest American films – the original and the 10th anniversary edition – as well as among the art form’s great love stories and film scores. The film also earned recognition twice on AFI’s accounting of cinema’s most memorable quotes – for “Stella! Hey, Stella!” and “I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.”
