Second-Annual AFI Workshop Takes Places June 28–July 1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — May 10, 2019, Los Angeles, CA — The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced a call for applicants for the second-annual AFI Cinematography Intensive for Women Sponsored by Panavision and RED. The tuition-free program will delve into the fundamentals of visual storytelling on the AFI Campus in Los Angeles, June 28–July 1, 2019. The Intensive seeks candidates with prior cinematography experience who demonstrate a passion for visual storytelling, collaboration and critique, and are able to fully commit to a rigorous four-day program.
The AFI Cinematography Intensive for Women, a four-day workshop led by world-class AFI Cinematography faculty and master-level guests, will empower participants to continue pursuing their cinematography career. Through production workshops, discussions, screenings of the work of pioneering female cinematographers and more, the program seeks to increase the number of women working in cinematography.
Submissions open today, May 10, and the deadline to apply is May 23. Application and requirements are here. Applicants will be notified of status in early June.
The Intensive is spearheaded by AFI Conservatory Cinematography Discipline Head Stephen Lighthill, ASC, and AFI Director of Nancy Malone Inclusion Initiatives Tessa Blake. “The AFI Conservatory is thrilled to once again invite female cinematographers to campus to continue exploring their field through this initiative, thanks to the support of Panavision and RED,” said Lighthill. “With this program we hope to give more diverse DPs greater opportunity, and to offset the gender parity within our industry.”

The AFI Conservatory Cinematography program has propelled female cinematographers to great success, including trailblazer Rachel Morrison (MUDBOUND, BLACK PANTHER), the first woman ever nominated for the Academy Award® for Best Cinematography, as well as two-time Grammy® Award winner Melina Matsoukas (Beyoncé’s “Formation,” INSECURE, as director), Ava Berkofsky (INSECURE), Carolina Costa (FLOWER), Autumn Durald (PALO ALTO), Mimi Leder (THE LEFTOVERS, as director) and Lisa Wiegand (LAW & ORDER TRUE CRIME), among others.
The AFI Cinematography Intensive for Women is one of AFI’s trailblazing efforts to empower female filmmakers, including the pioneering AFI Directing Workshop for Women, the Young Women in Film Intensive and the AFI Catalog’s “Women They Talk About” gender study. About the AFI Conservatory In 1969, the AFI Conservatory opened its doors to an inaugural class that included Terrence Malick, Caleb Deschanel and Paul Schrader. Today, the AFI Conservatory offers a two-year MFA degree in six filmmaking disciplines: Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting. Aspiring artists learn from the masters in a collaborative, hands-on production environment with an emphasis on storytelling.
