Seeking to create a new kind of musical, writer and lyricist Dean Pitchford originated the idea for FOOTLOOSE (1984) in 1979, after which he spent some time researching actual dancing bans in towns across America. Directed by Herbert Ross, the result became a modern classic, which the title track named by AFI among cinema’s greatest songs.
