With THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940), legendary director George Cukor reunited costars Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn – who’d starred previously together in SYLVIA SCARLETT (1935), BRINGING UP BABY (1938) and HOLIDAY (1938) – for a hilariously tangled socialite love story, with Hepburn forced to choose between Grant, James Stewart and her new fiancé played by John Howard. Both Hepburn and Grant were counted among the American Film Institute’s ranking of the greatest legends of the silver screen (with Hepburn appearing at #1!), and Stewart is a recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award. The film itself appears on four of the American Film Institute’s lists celebrating excellence in the art form – including among the greatest films of all time (both the original list and its 10th anniversary edition) as well as the greatest comedies and love stories.
