For the third consecutive year, AFI Conservatory Cinematography Discipline Head Stephen Lighthill has been re-elected president of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). This will be Lighthill’s fourth term as president, having been elected in 2020 and serving his first term from 2012-2013. AFI Alumni Amy Vincent (AFI Class of 1991) was also re-elected as Vice President at the ASC, and Steven Fierberg (AFI Class of 1995) is a board member.

“As an organization, we are focused on education, continued improvements of safety practices, and further expanding our diversity and outreach efforts,” said Lighthill, “The last year has presented many adversities for our community, and we are proud of how our members met these challenges while continuing to take storytelling to new places.”

Lighthill has been chair of the film school’s Cinematography program since 2004, where he has been a leader in advancing gender diversity at both the faculty and graduate levels. Additionally, he has served as an officer on the National Executive Board of the International Cinematographers Guild. He has served as cinematographer on many documentaries including GIMME SHELTER and BERKELEY IN THE 1960s. His cinematography credits for independent features include OVER-UNDER, SIDEWAYS-DOWN, HOT SUMMER WINDS and SHIMMER, all produced for PBS’ American Playhouse. Lighthill served as Director of Photography on the TV series VIETNAM WAR STORY, EARTH 2 and NASH BRIDGES. He returned to documentaries as the cinematographer on BOFFO! TINSELTOWN’S BOMBS AND BLOCKBUSTERS and THE ALZHEIMER’S PROJECT: CAREGIVERS, both for HBO. He was honored with the ASC Presidents Award in 2018.
