Return to Campus
AFI intends to reopen the AFI Campus for Conservatory Fellows to the extent permitted by local and state regulations and health and safety guidelines. California has issued guidelines for reopening higher ed campuses and promoting a safe educational environment, and AFI’s plans are well within those guidelines.
Our hybrid model is flexible and ensures that health and safety remain the primary goal in these uncertain times. All AFI Faculty and staff who can carry out their work duties from home will continue to do so until further notice.
AFI Fellows, Faculty, staff and guests returning to the AFI Campus will be required to wear a mask or face covering at all times in accordance with California’s statewide order, practice social distancing and wash hands frequently for 20 seconds with soap and water.
While our goal is to have as much of your AFI experience in person as possible, there are Fellows and Faculty who have expressed an interest in a hybrid model. Our plan is to deliver a mix of labs, hands-on production compliant with industry safety standards and remote learning opportunities. We are also sensitive to the needs of International Fellows, who are facing visa and travel restrictions that might delay a return to the U.S. in time for classes to begin. We will remain flexible.
AFI is currently making modifications to its physical space to conform to current health and safety standards. We will also be creating outdoor classroom spaces under expansive awnings. One benefit of an 8 ½ acre campus is that we have the space for proper social distancing.
We will return to production with enhanced protocols as soon as it is safe to do so.
It’s Up to You – and to All of Us
AFI Fellows, Faculty and staff will be asked to wear a face covering, practice social distancing and report regularly on their personal health and any symptoms of COVID-19.
You will also be asked to consider your AFI Community when you are off-campus. We take pride and comfort in knowing that we are individuals from around the world – but one community. And we’ll need to take care of each other when living our lives when not together. We also need to be dedicated to open communication as a community. You will receive frequent updates from Fellow Affairs as to the ever-evolving nature of the world around us, and we welcome your voice in this process.
The Investment in Your Future
AFI has secured two off-campus soundstages to expand our production footprint when current restrictions are lifted. These spaces will serve as lab environments to allow for both production and class activity.
AFI is adding between 20 and 25 new faculty and staff to accommodate the state’s guidelines of six-foot distancing in classroom spaces.
AFI has added a COVID Compliance Officer and a Public Health Professional to our team.
The AFI Advantage
Your future will be defined by your commitment to those who believe in you.
At AFI – you have your fellow Fellows, you have a vast and varied AFI Alumni Community and you have the AFI Board of Trustees who are leading the Institute through extraordinary times.
