Guiding Principles – American Film Institute

Guiding Principles

In the creation of the reopening plan, the AFI senior management team was guided by a commitment to promote the wellbeing of the AFI community and preserve the academic mission of the Conservatory through a focus on five principles: Health and Safety, Access, Flexibility, Equity and Stewardship

and Safety

In considering reopening campus, AFI is committed to creating policies that prioritize AFI community health. AFI Fellows, Faculty, staff and guests returning to the AFI Campus will be required to wear a mask or face covering at all times in accordance with California’s statewide order, practice social distancing and wash hands frequently. Please visit the PROTECT page to learn more about the modifications to the AFI Campus and new safety guidelines.

The policies instituted by AFI ensure access to AFI resources – through virtual learning and working environments – and, when it is safe, the AFI Campus.

Understanding that the pandemic remains an evolving situation and that each AFI community member faces different individual challenges posed by the virus, AFI policies create flexible policies for work and learning, remotely and on-campus.

The policies are designed to consider what each community member needs for their success. For specific needs not yet addressed, Fellows can contact Fellow Affairs, and Faculty and staff can contact Human Resources.

AFI’s mission to protect and preserve the legacy of American film began over 50 years ago – and we will continue to do so through financial integrity today. Join AFI in the preservation of film history and support the next generation of storytellers by donating today.
