AFI SPECIAL AWARDO.J.: MADE IN AMERICA |
Honorees will gather on January 6, 2017, at the AFI AWARDS private luncheon, a noncompetitive and intimate event where AFI will reveal the jury rationales for each selection. The jury — comprised of AFI Trustees, scholars, artists and critics — is listed in full here.
The AFI AWARDS luncheon will be sponsored by Audi, a supporter of AFI and its programs for the past 13 years. The event’s Patron of the Arts is Gregory Annenberg Weingarten, Vice President and Director of the Annenberg Foundation and founder of GRoW @ Annenberg. The event is also sponsored by American Airlines, the official airline of AFI. At the luncheon, AFI will present jury rationales providing artistic and cultural context for the selection of each honoree. Press coverage of the AFI AWARDS luncheon is strictly by invitation only. Photos will be available online through AFI immediately following the event.

Why is Loving missing from your best movies list? Unbelievable oversight!
P
Sho U Right!
Johnny
I would have replaced Zootopia with Moana, they both are excellent films but Moana was a slightly better film.
John
Get out of here and take your asinine comment with you!
Zootopia is the better film! This isn’t up for debate! If you took time to read what critics have said about Moana you’d see that time and time again Zootopia is used as the bar of quality! Moana doesn’t bring anything new to the table, Zootopia does! It deserves this award and rightfully so!
Douglas
LOL!
Joe Kocur
As Patrick Swayze said in ‘Roadhouse,’ “opinions may vary.” Thank you for playing.
Omar
Umm…..no.
Janice Alpern
I totally agree with your movie choices and was glad you included Sully because it was a pleasant surprise for me that it was so well done. This is Us is by far my favorite t.v. series and I thought The Night Of was excellent.
Max Fraley
A good year, but where is THE JUNGLE BOOK??? PLEASE!
Douglas
I don’t think a special effects re-imaging of a 100 year old book and multiple spinoffs gives reason to be beside the best films of the year.
Brian Smith
I think Hachsaw Ridge is one of the best film I have see in many years!!
Brian Smith
I Think Hacksaw Ridge is the best film I have seen in many years!
Patrice
This Is Us rivals Game of Thrones in my book.
Mees Teeuwen
I’m glad you put People V. OJ up there. Very good show, but it seems like people have forgotten it’s existence.
Lyric Rillera
Very glad to see that AFI is recognizing both OJ Simpson themed film series. Each one had a different perspective and are compelling in their own right.
John
Thank you AFI for including Zootopia! No other film this year has been more relevant of more deserving! When Zootopia was released no one and I mean NO ONE expected such greatness from such a modest film released outside of holiday or summer flair. Yet it became a rare critical and box-office success and is loved by millions around the world! A good film with a good message was able to take its place among so many “blockbusters” and I feel that’s a very positive thing!
Omar
I really hope this enhances Zootopia as a best picture nominee at the Oscars. What would make it even more extraordinary is Zootopia was released 5 days after last years Oscars.
RC Ward
Where the heck is the love for “Billions” that was the best acting I have seen on TV in a long time.
Matt Gauer
I’m so glad Zootopia made the list, it’s one of the best animated films I’ve seen years. Although not a Pixar film, it ranks with Pixar’s finest. And yes, I think it’s slightly better than Moana.
Omar
Totally agree. Zootopia shocked everyone. Well deserved.
Michael
A couple of “. . .eh?” choices on the list, but then again, I don’t know what I would replace them with.
Moonlight and Zootopia are definitely the top two. You can tell those were fantastic, both critically and financially, because those are the ones the Alt-Right is/was loosing their collective s*** over. :p

Zootopia’s entry made me so excited. It’s clearly the fan’s favourite and so cool AFI decides to honor that. Westworld should deserve a spot tho, but cool to see Stranger Things. Great year for entertainment.
Tom
Zootopia!!! Very rare that a animated film makes AFI’s top 10 of the year! This is pretty amazing!
Hazim Zakwan Bin Mohd Supian
Congrats to Zootopia for being in the name of the top 10 of the American Film Institute (AFI). Zootopia is best movie in 2016 since I watch it and so this movie should be award so bad. Btw, good luck. ☺☺☺
George Leyva
No South Park? They had an amazing Season 19 and Season 20!
Omar
So happy Zootopia made the AFI list! First animated movie to make the list since Toy Story 3. And this was a better movie.
Omar
So disappointed Moana didn’t make the list. First animated movie to make the list since Toy Story 3. And this was a better movie.
Kathryn Tait
Why is Outlander never considered for best TV show? Constantly overlooked. Acting is exceptional and concept is something not seen before. Same shows are always on the list. Very disappointed again.
Jenny Doyle
Hell or High Water was a great film. Loved it.
Ben Foster, Chris Pine, Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham did fantastic work in it, and so did the support cast.
Why were there no Oscar nominations for the other three main guys in this movie , namely,(Ben, Chris or Gil) I really don’t understand how the academy overlooked them.
At least Ben Foster won the Independant spirit award for his role. Well done Ben, he was GREAT in it!
