AFI Movie Club: THE BIG SLEEP

Director Howard Hawks’ iconic film noir, THE BIG SLEEP (1946), brings Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe to the screen – quintessentially embodied by Humphrey Bogart, whose interpretation of the literary gumshoe earned a place among the American Film Institute’s greatest screen heroes. The second onscreen pairing of Bogart and Lauren Bacall – after TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (1944) – sizzled with their palpable screen chemistry. Bogart and Bacall were both named by AFI among cinema’s greatest screen legends.
