In a May, 1975 seminar at AFI, Wise said of this scene:

"One of the big problems we had was that great moment in the gym, when Tony and Maria discover each other. On stage, the lights go down on everyone except them. The problem was how to get the quality of being alone in this place in cinematic terms. We fooled with that until we could put them alone in the crowd and make it effective cinematically. The treatment that finally ended up in the film was a combination of special lighting on the set and double exposures for vignette effects done on the optical printer by Lin Dunn and his group."
