Winner of 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Robert Wise's electrifying adaptation of the landmark Broadway musical resets the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet among street gangs on New York's Upper West Side, circa 1950s. Jerome Robbins's exuberant choreography, a score composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a superb cast make the classic story of star-crossed lovers believable—even as the characters sing in each other's faces and dance across tenement rooftops. Rita Moreno won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Anita.
