This sweetly absurd comedy features co-writer Steve Martin in his first starring role as Navin R. Johnson, born "a poor black child." When he leaves his adoptive family to find his way in the world, Navin bumbles through a series of odd jobs including circus work—"For one dollar, I'll guess your weight, your height or your sex." People often exploit his naivete, until he invents a nose support device for eyeglasses that makes him rich. Packed with visual gags, takeoffs on sentimental movie traditions and the support of Bernadette Peters as the comic kewpie doll, THE JERK is a reminder of the power of laughter in American film.
