Billy Wilder said he was inspired by David Lean's BRIEF ENCOUNTER (1945) when he wrote the script for this bittersweet comedy—an early '60s swipe at corporate America. Jack Lemmon (fresh off SOME LIKE IT HOT) plays Buddy, an ambitious young company man who passes the keys to his apartment up the ladder in hopes of getting a promotion. When cynical personnel manager Fred MacMurray uses the apartment for extramarital trysts with Fran, the offbeat elevator operator who Buddy has also fallen for, Buddy is forced to reexamine his ambitions. "Shut up and deal," is just one of the iconic lines uttered by Shirley MacLaine in her touching pre-feminist portrayal. The winner of five Oscars, THE APARTMENT was the last of the classic black-and-white movies to win Best Picture.
