THE TRIALS OF DARRYL HUNT
Ricki Stern, Annie Sundberg
USA, 2005, 113 minutes
DC Premiere
The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states affirmatively the righteous maxim, ÒInnocent until proved guilty.Ó But this devastating and provocative film makes clear that in real-ity only some have this right.
In 1984, a brutal rape and murder was committed in North Carolina. A young black man by the name of Darryl Hunt was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was convicted of the crime. Despite ample evidence to the contrary, including eyewitness tes-timony, DNA evidence, his own proclamation of innocence and even an eventual confession from the real criminal, Darryl Hunt was forced to spend nearly twenty years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Using archival footage and original material, filmmakers Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg bring us into the trials, legal meetings, parole board hearings and prison cells. They meticulously weave together nearly two-decades of evidence revealing the ongoing, shocking failure of a judicial system to make this glaring wrong right. Through all this, astonishingly, Darryl Hunt maintains his dignity and finds a way to forgive even those who cannot forgive him.
This is a scathing indictment of a system gone wrong and a poignant portrait of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of injustice.
