TAILOR-MADE DREAMS

Marco Wilms
GERMANY, 2006, 87 minutes

North American Premiere

Issar is an Indian tailor of extraordinary ability. Through the years, he has amassed a loyal following from around the globe. Whether it is a tuxedo for a wedding or a hot pink suit for-well, just because-his clients are willing to travel great distances to have Issar make it. Yet, as he begins to face the reality of his impending retirement, he longs for the road not traveled and mourns the loss of his youthful ambition-to be a Bollywood star.

Enter Marco Wilms, a loyal customer from Germany and a filmmaker, who decides to take Issar on a grand journey across Europe to visit his faithful clients and stage elaborate Bollywood numbers that will serve as interludes in the documentary he has resolved to make of the trip.

Issar's journey elicits a vast range of responses from his former clients: some are delighted to see him and welcome him into their homes with equal measures of warmth and astonishment, while others awkwardly intimate that they would prefer to keep the relationship located strictly within the confines of the tailor shop.

To this end, Issar's journey evokes as much as it resolves. While getting to fulfill his life's ambition of performing Bollywood numbers (which unfortunately for him lack all the grace and elegance of his suits) he also must come to the painful realization that some friendships and dreams have their limits.

Wilms' film is a joyous romp tinged with melancholy. While brimming with vibrant musical numbers and zany characters, it is ultimately a touching meditation on the fragility of dreams, even if they are tailor-made, and the courage to pursue them nonetheless.
