PUNK'S NOT DEAD

USA, 2006, 115 minutes

In the early 1980s, a teenage Susan Dynner found herself in smelly basements and cramped clubs, watching punk shows in Washington, DC. And just like thousands of other outsider youths, thought, "Yes! This is where I belong."

Twenty-five years later, the kids are still at it. Still rebelling, still trying to find a place to call their own. But their scene has been commercialized; their look is purchased, not hand-sewn with dental floss. In PUNK'S NOT DEAD, filmmaker Dynner explores the origins of the punk underground and its intersection with mainstream culture today.

Dynner only touches on the Ramones and the Sex Pistols and jumps straight to the 80s, when mohawks rose to rival the highest glam hairdos. This second wave of punk, led by more melodic bands like Bad Religion and NOFX, spawned pop-punk, its most commercially successful form.

Including recent bands like Blink-182 and Green Day, Dynner shows how bands on major labels with national airtime go against the do-it-yourself heart of the movement.

Not every punk has a six-figure contract and a slot on the Warped Tour, or the once unthinkable Grammy nomination. The old bands still tour, without major label support, keeping the original scene alive. Dynner's film cuts a wide swath, expertly mapping the subculture. With interviews from Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, and Ian MacKaye, among many others, Dynner questions whether the nonconformist spirit is still an essential element of the music.
