THE LAST WALTZ
USA, 1978, 117 minutes
THE LAST WALTZ opens with the instruction "This film should be played loud!" And so it should. With its deft blend of anecdote, band interviews, and matchless performances by some of rock and roll's greatest luminaries, including Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell, Martin Scorsese's seminal concert film remains the standard against which all others must be measured.
Celebrating The Band's 1976 farewell show at the Winterland in San Francisco, this film exquisitely blends Scorsese's distinct visual style with the ramshackle glory of the gifted quintet that rose to fame in the '60s as Bob Dylan's backup band. As the narrative moves seamlessly between performances and quirky interludes with the charismatic and sometimes reticent band members, their varied personae come to the fore and merge into a constellation of musical genius and artistic presence.
