LA PERSONA DE LEO N.
Alberto Vendemmiati
ITALY, 2005, 85 minutes
North American Premiere
Nicole de Leo glides through the winding alleyways of Venice, her high heels click-clacking on the cobblestone streets. She has a captivating self-awareness and elegance. Each step shows determination, a willingness to move forward and never look back.
What Nicole has turned away from is the sex of her birth-she was born male. Underneath the layers of makeup and material, behind the partially transformative effects of hormone treatments, Nicole is struggling to become fully realized. She grapples with feelings of incompleteness, exacerbated by her disapproving and distant mother. Determined to make Mama-and the world-understand who she is, Nicole begins an inspired battle against the bureaucracy that stands in the way of a state-subsidized sex-change operation.
Over an intense, emotional five-year span and through a final, heartbreaking face-to-face visit with Mama, director Alberto Vendemmiati follows Nicole as she takes the necessary steps to become the lady she longs to be.
