FUCK
Steve Anderson
USA, 2005, 93 minutes
DC Premiere
Oh glorious F-word, how I love thee! As a noun, verb or descriptor, the sweet danger of your use peppers my speech, earning me the epithet "sailor mouth" as early as fifth grade.
Fuck is a uniquely satisfying word. Filmmaker Steve Anderson certainly shares my appreciation for it. Anderson explores its universal adaptability and its place in the English language, politics, comedy, film and television, religion and in the personal lives of English speakers everywhere.
The editors of the Merriam-Webster dictionary and assorted linguists explore the etymology of fuck, which contrary to popular opinion does not mean "Fornication Under Consent of the King." Unfortunately, its true origins are unknown. Hilarious interviews with Hunter S. Thompson, Billy Connolly, Ice-T, Sam Donaldson, Janeane Garofalo and various talk show hosts map the cultural relevance of the word and the variety of ways people use it. The high point of the movie is Pat Boone sharing his personal swear word, Boone! Everyone should say "Boone!"
Ultimately, FUCK is a movie about free speech. As Lenny Bruce says, "If you can't say fuck, you can't say fuck the government." Freedom of expression must extend to words that offend. Love it or hate it, fuck is here to stay. Boone!
