DARKON

Andrew Neel, Luke Meyer
USA, 2006, 89 minutes

DC Premiere

Everybody fantasizes about being a hero. Unfortunately, for most of us, real-life gets in the way. DARKON is a real life story about the transformative power of fantasy.

Andrew Neel and Luke Meyer's film is a compelling and entertaining look at a unique subculture: the group of young men and women who engage in live action role-playing in the fantasy realm that they've created and called Darkon-which in reality is various fields and open spaces around Baltimore, Maryland.

In the political climate of Darkon, revolution is afoot. The sub-clan of Laconia, led by Bannor (Skip, a stay-at-home dad), has seceded from the coalition of Mordom and is trying to recruit other factions to join their cause. The large and powerful realm of Mordom, led by Keldar (Kenyon, a middle-manager), will fight to keep the empire together. Will Bannor's legion of rebels overcome the oppressive forces of Keldar? The epic final battle will reveal the future of Darkon.

In the film, group members participate in intense battles and dramatic scenes, juxtaposed with interviews about their "real" and very ordinary lives. For the denizens of Darkon, developing their fantasy characters allows them to grow and find themselves in their real-world personalities.

Glorious nature! Overcoming the creepy-crawlyness of the cicada and allowing the viewer to see the beauty and humor in its life, this is nature filmmaking at its best.
