A CERTAIN KIND OF BEAUTY
Liz Witham, Nancy Slonim Aronie
USA, 2006, 69 minutes
World Premiere
MS. Multiple Sclerosis. It was not part of Dan Aronie's plan.
Aronie was, at age 27, handsome, debonair, self-admittedly arrogant-a man destined for great things. Until MS changed it all.
Filmed in part by his mother and told over a six-year period from the time of his diagnosis, the film chronicles Dan's journey of unexpected discovery. His is an odd love story-a sometimes bitter, sometimes bittersweet tale of one man's battle with the gradual disintegration of his own body, his independence and his dreams.
A CERTAIN KIND OF BEAUTY is told through the eyes of family, friends and Dan himself, and is beautifully crafted from images of daily life, the intimate confessions to the camera and the tragic moments at home and in the hospital.
Throughout, the tender care by his family never falters, and as Dan struggles with the purpose of living, the tie between him and his parents ignites our hearts. Their devotion to their child is never stronger than when all his confidence in life has dwindled. Their patient care and constant commitment speak volumes about the love and power of family.
