THE BREAST CANCER DIARIES

Linda Pattillo
USA, 2006, 82 minutes

Ann Murray Paige was a successful local anchorwoman in Maine before she put her career aside to raise her children. At age thirty-eight, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Ann returns to her familiar place in front of the camera-this time, however, exploring herself as the subject.

Filmmaker Linda Pattillo's deft touch allows us intimate access into Ann's most private thoughts about her battle with breast cancer, thoughts that are alternately reflective, sobering, grim, funny, wry and sometimes outlandish. But her struggle against the disease and the invasion of modern medicine into her body is not a solo journey. Hers is a family effort-one mixed with humor, love-struck moments and inspiration. We watch as her husband, children and family become a mirror of her own transformation. Particularly moving is the tender relationship between Ann and her four-year-old son, Christopher. Mother and child each learn from the other in a way that gives new meaning to the old adage, "From the mouths of babes...."

Ann's journey reveals her previously untapped power as she fights not only for her own survival, but to be there for her children. THE BREAST CANCER DIARIES unflinchingly documents one woman's battle against a disease that every woman fears. It does so with wit, compassion, insight and best of all-an unvarnished commitment to the embrace of life!
