THE FESTIVAL. SILVERDOCS brings the best new documentaries to Washington, DC, area audiences, with six full days of programming showcasing over 75 films, evening symposia programs and special guests from behind and in front of the camera. Now in its 3rd year, SILVERDOCS attracts the most sought-after filmmakers and films from around the world, and is becoming the fastest growing and most talked about documentary festival in the United States.
Concurrently with the Festival, SILVERDOCS produces an International Documentary Conference with three full days of seminars, workshops, screenings and pitch sessions, and informal networking opportunities for filmmakers and funders.
Also at SILVERDOCS, the Annual Charles Guggenheim Symposium, named for the late four-time Academy Award® winner. The Guggenheim Symposium honors filmmakers who exhibit a passion for their subject, convey a profound respect for democratic values, and have mastered the power of the documentary to capture current events and frame history. Two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple was honored in 2004.
Films such as MY ARCHITECT, ASYLUM, BORN INTO BROTHELS, CONTROL ROOM, LIBERIA: AN UNCIVIL WAR, ORIGINAL CHILD BOMB and FOO FOO DUST have won awards at SILVERDOCS.
SILVERDOCS was created through a unique alliance between AFI and Discovery Channel to showcase, honor and expand the audience for independent documentaries.
