THREE OF HEARTS: A POSTMODERN FAMILY

Susan Kaplan
USA, 2004, 95 minutes

Sam and Steven are a loving, committed couple facing the joys and struggles of the average same-sex couple. But after dating for a short time, Sam wonders what it might be like to bring a woman into their relationship. For seven years, they meet and date numerous women before they finally meet Samantha. She falls in love with not one but both men and agrees to live in a trinogamous relationship.

THREE OF HEARTS follows Sam, Samantha and Steven as their relationship grows, changes, and defines itself. They get married, open a wellness center, and have children together. They face all the issues more traditional couples face with the added complications of having three opinions, three egos and three hearts.

Susan Kaplan films their lives candidly, capturing the joys and frustrations of a normal, healthy relationship. Sam, Samantha and Steve allow the exploration of their unique trinity with openness and trust, answering all the questions posed to them in interviews spanning eight years. They are entertaining and well adjusted people, proud of their love and their commitment to each other.

Yet, just when Sam, Samantha and Steve's relationship seems too good to be true, their union faces the complexities of changing feelings and miscommunication. Kaplan presents their unusual situation as not at all shocking, challenging our definition of a normal relationship.
