THE SWENKAS
Jeppe Rønde
Denmark/South Africa, 2004, 72 minutes
Among the laborers working in Johannesburg are a group of men who transform themselves every Saturday night into Swenkas. They wear finely tailored Western suits and participate in a competition that is part fashion show, part beauty contest, part talent contest. The men pride themselves not only on their appearance, but also on their poise, politeness and dignity. There is a small reward for the winner, but mostly the men compete for the honor of winning and being admired by their peers.
Jeppe Ronde's film is more than a visual study of this cultural phenomenon. It is also the story of one young man, Sabelo, whose father led the group and has just passed away. Another elder, Mr. Dangerous, takes Sabelo under his wing and provides guidance both professionally and personally. Sabelo's family has endured many tragedies, and his courage seems to be failing him, but the camaraderie and support of his fellow Swenkas may sustain him.
Shot on 35mm film in stunning Cinemascope, the film also incorporates a fictional elder Zulu narrator. Observing the Swenkas and speaking in a deeply engaging, sonorous voice, he provides a detached, philosophical perspective on events. THE SWENKAS has a unique narrative and visual rhythm that is more akin to storytelling than documentary; it is a film whose sonic, visual and emotional elements will not be soon forgotten.
